Tip Calculator

The standard in the US is 15–20% for sit-down restaurants. 18% is a common default for good service, 20% for excellent service. For buffets or counter service, 10% is typical. Always tip on the pre-tax amount.

Tip is traditionally calculated on the pre-tax bill amount. However, some people tip on the total including tax — this slightly increases the tip amount and is also acceptable. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax amount for a traditional calculation.

Use the “Split Between” stepper to set the number of people. The calculator divides both the tip and total equally. For unequal splits (e.g. someone ordered more), calculate the full total and divide manually based on each person’s share.

For food delivery, 15–20% is standard, with a minimum of $3–5 regardless of order size. Tip more for large orders, bad weather, or long distances. The tip goes directly to the delivery driver, so it’s an important part of their income.
